What is often a Wiring Diagram?

A wiring diagram is a straightforward visual representation in the physical connections and physical layout of the electrical system or circuit. It shows how the electrical wires are interconnected and will also show where fixtures and components might be coupled to the system.

How is really a Wiring Diagram Different from your Schematic?

A schematic shows the blueprint and function with an electrical circuit, but is not worried about the physical layout of the wires. Wiring diagrams show the way the wires are connected and where they need to perfectly located at the actual device, along with the physical connections between each of the components.

How is a Wiring Diagram Different coming from a Pictorial Diagram?

Unlike a pictorial diagram, a wiring diagram uses abstract or simplified shapes and lines showing components. Pictorial diagrams in many cases are photos with labels or highly-detailed drawings of the physical components.

Standard Wiring Diagram Symbols

If a line touching another line includes a black dot, it means the lines are connected. When unconnected lines are shown crossing, you will see a line hop.

Most symbols used on a wiring diagram resemble abstract versions with the real objects they represent. For example, a switch would have been a break in the fishing line which has a line at an angle towards the wire, similar to the light source switch you’ll be able to flip off and on. A resistor will probably be represented with a series of squiggles symbolizing the restriction of current flow. An antenna can be a straight line with three small lines branching off at its end, much like a real antenna.
